EIGHT

Lewis Baylor knew that his boys were trouble.

But boys would be boys.

He’d rather not force them to ignore their natural, God-given instincts. They just had to be careful.

He was pretty sure—as he looked out over the congregation of children—that they weren’t being careful. Not today, at least.

Damn them. Damn them both.

Rich and Jack were missing. The other counselors noticed their absence but made no fuss over it. Since Rich and Jack were Baylor’s sons, they could pretty much come and go as they pleased.

Goddamn. How many kids did they take?

Lewis had allowed them to take Mac Pawther. The boy had come to Baylor to alert him about the supposed “godlessness” of another camper. Apparently, a boy named Tanner—who was pretty easy to spot in a crowd after hearing Mac’s description of events—had used the Lord’s name in vain on the bus.

Baylor did take such offenses seriously.

If God’s name was evoked, it must be with reverence.

Especially at Creston.

But Mac had been in the wrong place at the right time. Alone with Baylor in his office, the child hadn’t expected to be knocked unconscious, roped up, and dragged off to the Honeymoon Lodge. He also didn’t expect to be offered as a present to the counselors.

It was disturbing and disgusting to Baylor, but he knew that things would get worse if Jack and Rich didn’t have an opportunity to let off some steam when they needed it.

But, apparently, one child wasn’t enough to satiate Baylor’s brood.

Shit. Baylor thought, trying to figure out who was missing.

He was standing in front of the entire camp. Wearing his tie and his button up, he looked like he was about to give a proper sermon. Behind him, the smell of turkey and soup wafted over his shoulders. The campers would eat as soon as Baylor was finished addressing them. He knew that they were salivating, and that they wouldn’t retain much of what he said.

Maybe I should just cut things short and go back to the Honeymoon Lodge. Maybe I can put a stop to whatever nonsense those boys are up to—

Baylor saw his sons enter the mess hall. They came in slowly, sneaking around like thieves. He immediately saw that both Jack and Rich had mud all over their clothes, as if they had been wrestling in the forest.

Jack caught Baylor’s eye. He gave his dad a cherubic grin and a shrug. His expression said: what’s the problem? I didn’t do nuthin’ wrong.

Baylor wouldn’t be playing those games. He frowned toward Jack, giving him the stink-eye. Without having to speak, Baylor knew that his displeasure had been communicated perfectly.

Jack knew that he and Rich were in trouble.

The two boys sat down in the corner. Rich looked guiltily toward his feet and Jack glowered at Baylor.

You made your own bed, boy. Now, sleep in it. Baylor thought before turning back toward his congregation of children. The boys of Creston were all bright eyed and ruddy faced. They had spent the whole evening playing, running around with their pals, and unpacking their luggage in their cabins.
